They realize there are things about the others that help complete them. Having said that, these are three interesting, unique individuals, and there’s obviously attraction there. Plus, they’re each haunted by their own personal demons and those create real obstacles to their ability to love and be loved. Our three heroes have little experience with the opposite sex-in some cases they haven’t even seen members of the opposite sex before. What can you tell us about the love triangle between Hope, Book, and Cat? Did I mention creepy? While THE PREY is a post-apocalyptic survival story at its core, there IS romance too. It’s flattering and exciting and, well, creepy. It’s kind of creepy actually, but in a good way! To have these visions-nightmares, really-about the RTA and then see them realized on the cover, it made me wonder if the designer was able to somehow peek inside my mind. How does it feel to see your vision come to life on the book’s cover?
You describe The Republic of The True America so vividly in the book. And since I’ve long admired all the fantastic young adult literature being written these days, I couldn’t wait to dive into the genre myself. Then this idea came along and it compelled me to write it. I’ve been writing plays for some time-everything from theatre for young audiences to one-person plays-but had not written a young adult novel before. My wife and I were on vacation in Colorado, and something about the landscape and the mountains and all the westerns I was reading at the time just triggered the idea of a group of sixteen-year-olds being raised for purposes they knew nothing about. You know how ideas sometimes just come to you? That’s what happened with THE PREY. The Prey goes on sale December 30th!
